Queens of the Stone Age
Man's Ruin Records
30 November 1998
Here we have one of the rarest records pressed in the past 25 years. A first pressing of Queens of the Stone Age's debut record rarely come up for sale especially the green pressings. 3000 1st pressings exist, 2500 were on black vinyl, 300 on yellow and 198 on this green translucent vinyl. I have seen only one or two ever come up for auction with one on discogs valued at just under £1000.
There are of course many bootleg versions of this record due to its scarcity and many of the bootlegs are very well done at least aesthetically. The telltale signs of an original like this comes down to a few criteria:
1. The matrix numbers on the dead wax are parallel to one another at 12 and 6 o'clock respectably. Bootlegs often have them at 90° angles or just one matrix number.
2. The openings on the gatefold sleeve have one fully open side for the vinyl but the left side is fully sealed. Bootlegs have two open sides often with one glued or just open.
There are likely more criteria but I haven't actually held a bootleg long enough to observe. Further information can be found at the following link or just Google for a vast amount of research by other collectors.
This, however, is a fully original pressing and in stunning condition throughout. I bought it myself from Picadilly Records in Manchester shortly after seeing them live. I have played it only a handful of times as I was bought another copy which I still play to this day. As such the record and sleeve are in fantastic condition and if you've been looking for the holy grail then you've just found it!

Outer Sleeve : Near Mint
1st press sleeve is in near perfect condition. There are no rips,
tears, laminate lift, ringwear or graffiti whatsoever. The spine is
strong and perfect. All the colours are vivid and it looks as if just
bought bar the most minor of shelf wear and I mean mild. All edges are sharp and flat and there is no foxing to speak of. It looks almost as new!
Inner Sleeve: Nr Mint
The first press inner with rounded edges is perfect in every way. No rips, tears or staining.
Vinyl Nr MINT
It is in near perfect condition. I know that I have only
played this very minimally, probably a handful.of times.at most and I look after my records so other than
the smallest of near invisible removals, it's in amazing condition. It sounds simply stunning and just jumps off the turntable.
There is undoubtedly a huge difference when compared to my represses. It
just sounds perfect as if the amps of the guitars are in the room. There are no jumps, skips or anything that will detract. On my playthough I only heard the occasional static at full volume. The dynamics are insane with every instrument being distinguishable. This is a record that was made to be played on a turntable. You won't be disappointed!
Labels: Nr Mint
Not a mark to mention, no spider lines, no writing, just perfect labels.
