Item Description

J.R. Monterose - Blue Note 1536 - 767 Lexington - 1st MONO Pressing - RVG EARHolyGrail ! Vinyl LP

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1st MONO PRESSING FROM 1957 of the self titled J.R. Monterose album on Blue Note. EXTREMELY RARE

MATRIX NUMBERS RVG BN-LP-1536-A / RVG BN-LP-1536-B, ETCHED IN THE TRAIL OFF DEAD WAX. The symbol of an ear is inscribed into the run out groove. The original 767 Lexington Ave NYC ADDRESS ON BOTH LABELS. There is no "Inc" and no "R" on the label. This is the genuine article. Deep Groove. 100% AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL.

This album is from our personal collection and was well maintained. Extremely rare.

Record Grade VG= Very well maintained. Purchased new in 1957, New York City. One owner. We just listened to both sides of the whole album with headphones on and it is a pleasure to hear. It plays beautiful. The vinyl has some visible surface scratches and scuffs from regular use as it is from our personal collection and always has been one of our favorites so we played it a lot. Kept in cool temperature its whole life with plastic sleeve on our shelf. Some pop sounds from use and age but nothing too distracting.

We listened again just now on two systems, my new Crosley player and an old player from the nineties. There are some minor pops during quiet moments and one very tiny one note jump on side B going into track three "Bobbie Pin" on the opening quarter note.

With that being said, itis quite a nice album, well kept and it plays nice and smooth.

Jacket Grade VG - = Shiny, clean, well maintained. No stains. Many years ago we put tape across top of jacket to cover up seam splits that are in 3 locations. Other than the seam splits the jacket is in great condition. A stamp on the right top rear says "N.R". If you are good at taping you will most likely remove our old tape and fix it up yourself. The jacket itself is very nice, its just the seem splits that give it that VG minus rating. A beautiful jacket for a 60 year old album. (see pictures)

J.R. Monterose was an American jazz tenor saxophonist (b. January 19, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan - d. September 16, 1993 in Utica, New York).

J.R. Monterose (not to be confused with tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose), worked with Buddy Rich, Claude Thornhill, Teddy Charles, Jon Eardley, Charles Mingus (1956 on "Pithecanthropus Erectus") and Kenny Dorham, among others.

The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded this rare vintage album 4½ stars and stated "J. R. Monterose's first session as a leader was a thoroughly enjoyable set of swinging, straight-ahead bop that revealed him as a saxophonist with a knack for powerful, robust leads in the vein of Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins. In fact, the quality of the music is so strong, J. R. Monterose qualifies as one of the underappreciated gems in Blue Note's mid-'50s catalog".
