Special note to foreign bidders: I declare foreign shipments as merchandise with the value you bid for them. Shipment to foreign buyers is via priority mail international express with insurance for the value bid. Please e-mail for shipping costs before bidding as this method costs more, but is insurable and trackable.

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.

Alternatively, if the ending winning bid is less than $50 and if you have perfect feedback and want this shipped first class international, it could be shipped that method with the understanding there is NO REFUND FOR ANY REASON since the item cannot be tracked online or insured. Example: United Kingdom 1-2 pounds $22.30 + $2.00 = $24.30.

Feedback/bidding policy: I check feedback daily and will return feedback promptly. Although I go to great lengths to accurately describe my items, if you feel the merchandise is not as described, e-mail me BEFORE leaving feedback and we will resolve it. Please note I do allow returns (see return policy below).

Description:Up for your consideration is the next in a series of unique Lps, this one from the Donald Byrd Sextet. Internet research showed that sometimes there is a booklet with the item. This auction DOES NOT contain an original booklet. However, on 2:24:14, a fellow e-bay faxed me a 7-page copy of the booklet, so I will include that with the item as well (many thanks to him for that!).

Personnel this LP:

  • Donald Byrd trumpet
  • Bernard McKinney euphonium
  • Yusef Lateef tenor saxophone
  • Barry Harris piano & arranger
  • Alvin Jackson bass
  • Frank Gans drums
  • Willie Bowen emcee.

Several unique things about this item: Firstly, the record retains the original shine with a few very light marks and fingerprints grading by sight in normal room light. I'm sure if you took this and put it under a 1000 watt bulb, you'd probably find something that makes it less than mint. If you're that kind of collector, and after a recent unpleasant experience with a buyer from Malaysia, let me suggest this auction is not for you.

I don't claim this record is mint. Based on past experience and visual examination, I'd expect the tracks to audibly average at least 1/2 of the way between VG+(excellent) and Near Mint.

Given the high value of this LP (past sales have gone for as much as $2556.00!), I will be providing a detailed track-by-track audio grade of the entire record.
02:20:2014: I took the time to play this disc and found the seven tracks to audibly average better than half way between VG+(excellent) and Near Mint. You can assign your own grade based on my comments and the grading scale shown below.

So this is your chance to own a unique item at a reasonable price. Bid early and often so you don't miss out on this auction!

It is further described below, please take the time to read before bidding.

    Please e-mail if questions.

Be sure to check my other listings to save postage on multiple winning bids. Please explore the "me" link next to feedback rating) to check out my store and some of the 15,000+ records I have for sale as well as the LP to CD transfer service I offer.

I am using the Goldmine scale of G=Good(1), VG = Very Good(2), VG+ = Very Good Plus(excellent)(3), NM = Near Mint(4) when grading the disc(s).

Here is a summary of the record(s):

Artist:Donald Byrd Sextet Title:Byrd-Jazz Record:Black vinyl with original shine, a few very light marks and fingerprints, grading by sight in normal room light. Labels:Black/silver with silver/black print. No stickers, no pen/pencil marks, a few spindle marks. The label on side A is unglued (I still have it, see scan). Based on what I have read, this is not unusual for this label. Trailing wax:Side 1: "TRLT 5A 5N". Side 2: "TRLT 5B 5N". Inner sleeves:A clear, plastic sleeve rounded on one edge with a 4" seam split down one side. An additional generic sleeve will be supplied. Cover:Back cover is a textured, black surface. Corners with up to slight wear a few creased tips. Top outer corner with a 1" seam split. Spine seam is split nearly top to bottom, except for 1" at the top and 1" at the bottom. No stickers. Front lower left corner has written in small print "Charlie Parker" (see scan). I'm not the original owner of this LP, so I don't know why that signature is there. I have no reason to believe it is signed by THE Charlie Parker. I did a search on the Internet, and this signature DOES NOT match what I can find for a real Charlie Parker signature. I do not claim to be a handwriting expert. Slight general wear. Cover is slightly bowed. The top paper is starting to lift front upper left corner. Rate the cover VG. Comments:I found the seven tracks to audibly average better than 1/2 of the way between VG+(excellent) and Near Mint. You can assign your own grade based on my comments and the scale shown below. An excellent and unusual addition to your LP collection. Side 1:Comments: Parisian ThoroughfareUp to a very, very light to very light surface noise with some very, very light pops (3.65) YusefUp to a very, very light surface noise (3.8) ShawnuffA few very light to light pops at the end of the track (3.5) Side 2:Comments: BluesA few very, very light pops more so at the beginning of the track (3.8) Torsion levelA few very light pops (3.5) Woody'n youUp to a very, very light surface noise (3.8) Dancing in the darkOne very, very light pop; some very, very light surface noise (3.8)

Additional criteria I use when audibly grading records for people:

    • NM(4) = absolutely nothing wrong at all (very rarely happens--I've even opened sealed records and they don't play Near Mint)
    • 3.5-3.9 = very, very light surface noise
    • 3.1-3.4 = very light surface noise, very light pops
    • VG+(3) = up to light pops and light surface noise (below this, one's enjoyment is affected, very subjective)
    • VG(2) = up to medium pops and moderate surface noise
    • G(1) = up to heavy pops and heavy surface noise

I normally ship Lp's in 14"x14"x6" boxes padded in styrofoam. Weight with box is about 1 pound 11 oz. Shipping is: $3.17 Media Rate (1-2 pounds) + $2.10 box/tape/packing + $1.05 delivery confirmation = $6.32.

Buyer pays shipping/handling. Standard method within U.S. is Media Rate, $4.00 This includes delivery confirmation which enables you to track shipping of your package online.
