BLUE NOTE DOUBLE LP SETTITLES ARE

BLUE N GROOVY - This is a fine collection of Blue Note jazz - acoustic jazz from the hard bop, soul jazz vein. Fans of this stuff will love it, as will fans of soul jazz who may not be inclined to listen to bop or more modern jazz stylings. This is jazz that gets a groove on without at all being "smooth" jazz. It is real jazz, yet it is groovy.

BEST OF BLUE BREAK BEATS FROM BLUE NOTE

Want some of the best jazz around-- Fortunately, for us, there's this Blue Note Records collection of the best from favorites like Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Grant Green. Now, the powers that be at EMI-Capitol thought to get some sells of this great jazz by packaging it as a "sample this" offering to hip-hoppers/rap ranconteurs. It turns out that they needn't have done so. The various volumes and the box set with Vols 1-4 has some great work like Holy Thursday/David Axelrod, The Beat Goes On/Buddy Rich, Who’s Making Love/Lou Donaldson, Sookie Sookie/Grant Green, Illusion/Andrew Hill, The Worm/Jimmy McGriff, Walk Tall/Cannonball Addereley, Light My Fire/Shirley Bassey, Spinning Wheel/Lonnie Smith, Street Lady/Donald Byrd, Dirty Old Bossa Nova/Howard Roberts, Flat Backing/Blue Mitchell and You’ve Made Me So Very Happy/Lou Rawls

BEST OF BLUE JUICE FROM BLUE NOTE
BLUE JUICE was conceived as a tribute to a certain kind of jazz compilation that was felt did not exist any more. It was the sort of thing that Gilles Peterson had devised with his legendary “Jazz Juice” series in the 1980s on Street Sounds where jazz, jazz funk, latin, old soul instrumentals all came together for the greater pleasure. In fact as anyone who bought them at the time would tell you a perfect primer to get you into the world of jazz related musics.

BLUE BRAZIL - BLUE NOTE IN A LATIN GROOVE 1994 RELEASE -- Other than the UK and the United States, Brazil has probably the most visible influence on the international music scene in the last 50 years, with American musicians especially - from Stan Getz and Eydie Gorme through to David Byrne and Paul Simon on through to the Beastie Boys all running south of the border at various times I their lives.

To many the most visible Brazilian records will be Astrud Gilberto singing “Girl From Ipanema” a great record which she recorded with her then husband Joao, and Stan Getz, which dragged a ton of people into either jazz or Brazilian music or both. Joao was one of the great composers from the first wave of Bossa Nova alongside Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle. More were to follow such as these included in the BLUE BRAZIL

Looking Good: Mod Club Classics is a 20-song compilation that attempts to recapture the feeling of a night out at a mod club at the height of the mod scene in the late '60s. The music is a mix of soul (Northern, Southern, and uptown), R&B, soul-jazz, and funky blues that is sure to get feet tapping and fingers snapping. The disc flows very smoothly from track to track and contains some stellar songs from big-time artists like B.B. King (the down-and-dirty "I've Got Papers on You Baby"), Ike & Tina Turner (the dead funky "I Can't Believe What You Say"), and Junior Wells (the rocking "Checking on My Baby"). Other highlights include Young-Holt Trio's groovy "Wack Wack," the original "Louie Louie" by Richard Berry, the heartbreaking "I Keep Forgetting" by the amazing Chuck Jackson, Lowell Fulson's razor sharp "Tramp," and Sugar Pie DeSanto's peppy "Do the Whoo Pee." Mod scholars could argue the inclusion of some of the tracks and wonder where some of their favorites are, but the fact remains that this is one darn good dance party disc. So leave any objections at the door, roll back the carpet, and experience (as the disc labels itself on the back cover) "a symphony in midnight blue mohair."

Full Title - Looking Good - Mod Club Classics. 'Looking Good' is the sound of the ultimate in mod clubs as envisioned by BGP, from the pounding soul of James Carr, Danny White & Sugar Pie De Santo to the smokey jazz of Mose Allison's classic 'Parchman Farm'. In between are powerhouse blues such as BB King's scorching 'I've Got Papers On You Baby' to original mod club classics from The Young Holt Trio, & Rodger Collins. 20 tracks

RAY BRYANT - Without a doubt Ray Bryant showed up at the 1977 Montreux festival ready to play - and to dazzle. What truly amazes one on this date is how Ray can take fairly common material and make it absolutely his own. SATIN DOLL, for example; it's been played a thousand times but Ray has found a way to present it differently: he does it as a hard-driving, up-tempo, in-your-face swinger - and it's wonderful. So too with John Lewis's dirge-like DJANGO: Ray does it anything but dirge-like but rather as an up-tempo burner accented with a pounding left hand. That forceful left hand is also in evidence on Strayhorn's TAKE THE A TRAIN, with the bass part coming across like something Pete Johnson or Albert Ammons might play. Amazing! JUNGLE TOWN JUBILEE is a sprightly tune written by Lloyd Glenn, a fun-spirited R&B trumpeter from the 40's and 50's, and Ray seems to be having a ball with it. IF I COULD JUST MAKE IT TO HEAVEN reveals gospel elements along with a sound similar to Roger Kellaway playing his ALL IN THE FAMILY theme - a unique performance. Ray plays the ST. LOUIS BLUES at times as if it were a train piece and he was a barreling locomotive. If jazz is the "sound of surprise," this album is a superb example of the music. I think it one of Bryant's very best. Grab it WHILE you can.

BLUES FOR TOMORROW -with this out of print edition unique marketing sticker with information about the artist and personnel involved in this masterpiece. Only available on this limited edition STICKER pressing. At first blush, this seems like it might be the worst sort of cash-in by Riverside Records, gathering a handful of seemingly unrelated tracks leftover from a number of the label's 1957 recording sessions by various artists into a compilation loosely grouped around the broadest possible theme: the blues. But I've had this LP playing in my house almost non-stop for the past days and can attest that this is an astonishingly rich and coherent album. Riverside honcho Orrin Keepnews may have been initially inspired to put this album together by the pressing need to release the title track. It's a leftover from the Monk's Music session, but what a leftover! Anyone familiar with that seminal album (and if you aren't, well, you should be) knows that Art Blakey and Coleman Hawkins were having a particularly fine day, and a young John Coltrane was making his presence felt. The whole thing positively crackles. "Blues for Tomorrow" is the entire cast from that album, jamming on a Gigi Gryce head, after Thelonious has left the building. The lengthy workout features an absolutely incendiary Hawkins solo as well as jaw-dropping work by Blakey and bassist Wilber Ware, carrying rhythm duties sans pianist. Ware takes a truly fine solo and then duets with Blakey, who is tapping out a subtle rhythm on his kit while Ware taps the wooden body of his bass. Very cool. But then Blakey enters a long drum roll and then literally explodes into an amazing solo. This cut had to see the light of day without delay, and Mr Keepnews then does a creditable job of pulling together some other atmospheric takes on the blues. The best of the rest is the cut by Herbie Mann's Californians, with Mann on bass clarinet and the redoubtable Jack Sheldon on trumpet. The most famous jazz bass clarinetist, Eric Dolphy, mined the instrument for its human vocal qualities, but Mann plays it like, well, a clarinet. It's deep and smooth, like brandy. Pianist Jimmy Rowles gives the the soloists lots of space, so the bass clarinet and the bass tend to dominate, giving this piece a beautifully dark palette. Things drop down a notch in quality and interest on what would have been the original LP's second side, with the weakest track being an indifferent piece left off of Sonny Rollin's Sound of Sonny album. Rollins' solo is tentative and Paul Chambers gets one his lengthy Paul Chambers solos. We've heard this before. But the Mundell Lowe guitar blues with pianist Billy Taylor is delightful, and Bobby Jaspar, better known for his flute work, takes things out nicely. Call it "alt-blues", Blues for Tomorrow makes for a very worthy collection.
