Spirogyra – Bells, Boots & Shambles was issued in the UK in April 1973 on Polydor 2310 246 Super. Despite being an absolutely brilliant folk-psych album, it sold very poorly. Sales would not have been helped by the fact that there were clearly hardly any copies pressed. You can’t distribute to the shops something that doesn’t exist! The album has been repressed by independent labels over the years to meet demand, but although these repressings are collectable in their own right, they lack the cachet of the ultra rare and highly desired original UK 1st pressing which is presented here in fantastic condition (particularly the vinyl!).
Martin Cockerham (vocals/guitar) and Mark Francis originally formed Spirogyra as a duo in Bolton, Lancashire in the summer of 1967. When Martin went to Canterbury University in 1969 he expanded the band to include fellow students Barbara Gaskin (vocals), Steve Borrill (bass guitar), and Julian Cusack (violin). They were soon spotted by student union entertainments officer Max Hole, who offered to manage them and got them a recording contract with B&C Records. Their debut album, St. Radigunds, was named after the street that their student house was on. It established them as a cult act on the underground club circuit, and sold respectably. Its follow-up, 1972's Old Boot Wine, appeared on Peg Records and showcased a harder-edged sound than their predominantly acoustic debut. After the release of Old Boot Wine, the band was pared back to the duo of Cockerham and Gaskin, who were by now romantically involved. Their final album, Bells, Boots and Shambles, appeared on Polydor in April 1973 and sold very poorly.
Widely regarded today as one of the classics of British 'acid folk', it featured guest appearances from the band's former members, as well as contributions from Henry Lowther on trumpet. Copies of all three albums are rare and expensive today, with Bells, Boots and Shambles almost impossible to acquire.
Dave Mattacks of Fairport Convention played drums on all three albums as a guest.
In March 1974 Spirogyra had their very last tour, with Martin Cockerham (vocals and guitar), Barbara Gaskin (vocals and electric piano), Rick Biddulph (bass and guitars) and Jon Gifford (woodwinds). The new, rather experimental material was very promising, but never made it on to a fourth studio album.

Very delicate unlaminated E.J.Day single sleeve is in Excellent condition with a little gentle edge and cornerwear. There is a tiny sticker tear down the lower yellow cross-spoke of the A in SPIROGYRA (you can just make this out in the photo if you look closely). There is one slight crease in the bottom right hand corner of the front. The spine has no wear and the text is fully legible. No unwanted writing. No seam splits. Bearing in mind the vulnerable construction, the sleeve is in remarkable condition for its age of 35 years.
The vinyl is in Excellent ++ condition. The record surfaces sparkle and betray no wear whatsoever. The labels likewise look brand new as does the spindle hole (as you can see in the photos). Playback is astonishingly good – I think I may have heard just two tiny low-level ticks throughout the entire duration of both sides, but I’m not sure - the audio is crystal clear without the merest hint of distortion or crackle. There can be few better examples than this left in existence.
I am not a dealer but a serious collector. All my records come from my private collection. Please read my ME page for details of my philosophy on descriptions and gradings. I absolutely guarantee my gradings as played through my system. All my records are cleaned on a Moth Mk II RCM and play-graded on a Rega Planar 3 turntable (MC cartridge) through an azur 840a amp into Matrix MX-1200 Reference speakers. Inferior component-type turntables without proper tracking are more prone to sticking and jumping than high-grade turntables. If you love vinyl, do yourself a favour and invest in a decent system if you don't already own one. You don't have to pay thousands. Excellent quality 2nd hand turntables are available on eBay for under £100 (about the price of 1 rare LP). Your investment will be more than rewarded by the additional listening pleasure you derive. BUT if, unexpectedly, you are unhappy for any reason, please get in touch.
Please see my other similar LPs for sale. Over the coming weeks and months I will be listing hundreds of classic prog, psych, folk and jazz LPs, including numerous Swirls and many other collectors' holy grails. Don't miss out - keep watching and bookmark me in your favourite sellers. Once they are gone, they are gone!!
Grading :
M = Mint - as new
NM = Near Mint - very few, light signs of usage that don’t affect play - the cover has only minor signs of wear.
EX = Excellent - some signs of usage, but very little lessening in sound quality – the cover might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VG = Very Good - no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch - normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.
G = Good - the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches - the cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
+ and - are used as appropriate.
