Ella Fitzgerald The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books Verve 314 519 832-2 16-CD box set with all elements intact

Fitzgerald vcl with orchestras under the direction of Buddy Bregman, Duke Ellington, Billy May, Nelson Riddle, Billy Strayhorn, or Paul Weston.

Recorded variously from 1956 to 1964. This production released 1994.

A unique production of the CD era, this clothbound box set presents all of the great singer s classic 1950s and 1960s songbook albums in their original form: that is, each album has been reproduced in miniature - down to the liner notes, scaled to size on the mini-album backs. Then, all of these mini-albums have been set inside a slipcase hard cardboard shell.

Special treatment has been given the two multi-LP songbooks - those of Ellington and Strayhorn and of the Gershwins. Each set of CDs is inside its own small, cardboard box, with the Gershwins including a tiny reproduction of the hardbound book that was sold with that original, five-LP set. As a bonus, there are five mini-reproductions of the original-LP-set artwork by Bernard Buffet, slipped inside its own envelope, inside the Gershwin cardboard box, inside the large cube that houses everything.

One critic compared The Complete Ella Fitzgerald Song Books to a magical Chinese box, with its box-within-box-within-same. It was, he said, one of the wittiest creations of the CD-box-set age, in jazz or any other music.

The set comprises more than 240 songs, including several alternative takes. And in addition to all of the original-LP liner notes, the box has a separate 120-page hardcover book with new liner notes, complete recording information, a history of the sessions, interviews with Verve founder Norman Granz, and rare photographs.

Issue: The original Verve release. I worked on the production I received one of the first sets when they came from the factory.

Condition of set: NM. Outside of hard-cardboard box, or shell, has some wear: The color has faded a bit there s one place where the cloth shows a slender thread, another where the cloth has a fold. Both very small imperfections.

Inside the shell, only the hardbound book the one with the new liner notes and track lists shows any sign of having been handled - on its outside. Its pages, as well as the liner-note pages inside each reproduced album, are immaculate. In fact, the only album reproductions that have ever been opened are those of Ellington and the Gershwins - though the reproductions of the Bernard Buffet artwork are stunningly clean.
