The album created a mythology that reached beyond the Chuck Berry folklorisms of the everyday rocker to create a new type of rock star. With ZIGGY, Bowie created a viable alter-ego to descend onto the planet and wreak havoc on rock s fertile soil. In doing so, he created the most original rock creation since the music s inception 20 years before.Musically, the album was as inspired as Ziggy s persona. Mick Ronson s snarling guitar evoked the triumphant power of the late 60s guitar heroes, but added a flash so dynamic fans knew why the Spiders were labelled glitter rockers. As an album, ZIGGY STARDUST told the story of rock through the eyes of Ziggy, an alien--with a narrative that was equally sensational and intimate.Any doubts as to Bowie s intentions to take over rock were displaced on a closer listen to Star. At the end of the song Bowie as Ziggy whispers, just watch me now, and his determination is eerily obvious. Combining skills as a mime artist and top-rate vocal dramatist, Bowie created Ziggy, the bisexual space man, who sang songs of darkness and disgrace. The planet was dying, something made evident on the first track Five Years, and the only way to survive was to Hang On To Yourself. In the end, they had to break up the band, according to the tale told in ZIGGY STARDUST, but the inevitably tragic strains of this Rock N Roll Suicide had left their mark on the dying planet. They are still being felt today.

On June 23, 1971, David Bowie performed for the first time at what was then known as the Glastonbury Fair . In the year 2015, Parlophone Records proudly announces the release of DAVID BOWIE FIVE YEARS 1969 1973, the first in a series of box sets spanning his career.
The ten album / 13-piece vinyl set features all of the material officially released by Bowie during the nascent stage of his career from 1969 to 1973. The set also includes tracks that have never before appeared on CD or digitally as well as new remasters.
Exclusive to the box set is Re:Call 1 a new compilation of non-album singles, single versions b-sides. It features a previously unreleased single edit of All The Madmen, which was originally set for a U.S. release but was never actually released. Also included is the original version of Holy Holy, which was only ever released on the original 1971 Mercury single and hasn t been available on any release since.
Also exclusive the box set of Five Years 1969 1973 is a 2003 stereo remix of The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by the album s original co-producer Ken Scott, previously only available on DVD with the LP/DVD format of the 40th anniversary edition of the album.
The collection is pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl for the LP Box Set.
The box set s accompanying 84 page book features rarely seen photos as well as technical notes about each album from producers Tony Visconti and Ken Scott, an original press review for each album and a short foreword by legendary Kinks front man Ray Davies.
An alternate cover has been created for the 2003 mix of Ziggy Stardust by Ken Scott, which features an outtake from the original Heddon Street photo session. There is also newly originated artwork for Re:Call 1 featuring a 1973 in-studio image from renowned photographer Mick Rock.

Music Icon David Bowie Releases 24th Studio Album 17 New Songs
David Bowie s 24th studio album, produced by long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, was announced on Bowie s 66th birthday. Where Are We Now? is the first single from his first album of original material in 10 years.
Working in secret, Bowie and producer Tony Visconti recorded the album over a two year period, spending about 3 months actually writing and recording the album.
In recent years, radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking. A new record - who would have ever though it? Who d have ever dreamed it? After all, David Bowie is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. With The Next Day , he definitely has something to say. Now we all know, David Bowie has been in the recording studio - just when we least expected it.
Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration, and social commentary. It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers.
According to producer Visconti, The material is so strong and beautiful - if people are looking for classic Bowie they ll find that on this album, but if they re looking for innovative Bowie, they ll find that on this album too. It s all there.
This persistent, well-manicured nostalgia could account for the startling warmth that exudes from The Next Day even when a melody sighs with an air of resigned melancholia, as it does on Where Are We Now?, it never delves into sadness, it stays afloat in a warm, soothing bath... H e confronts it morbidity head on with a series of songs about death and violence, shootings and suicides, war and no peace... Bowie serves up the gorgeous Where Are We Now a reminiscence only an older man could have written and one that will resonate most richly with older listeners but with younger ones too. The Bowie/Visconti team can still bring the chills... The production and sound you ask? Well Bowie and Visconti didn t produce this epic on the cheap and their sonic bona fides cannot be questioned... T he sound is pretty damn good by modern standards and the mix and production are stellar. There s a lot to dig into and the recording s overall clarity and reverberant warmth invite you in... Bowie remains in fine voice, and his songwriting is so consistent that, of the 17 tracks that appear on the vinyl release... the quality remains high throughout, with Valentine s Day and I d Rather Be High taking top honors. The crunchy electric guitar and propulsive rhythms of The Next Day which was mixed to tape with many backing tracks recorded live seem tailor-made for vinyl, and two of the bonus cuts qualify as essential.
