What are split trax?
Split trax are a special trax designed for live performance, consisting of a stereo recording with musical accompaniment on one channel and supporting vocals without solos on the other channel.
How are split trax used?
In live performance, a split trax allows the PA operator to blend in a controlled amount of recorded vocals to enhance and support the live vocals. Choirs are difficult to mic and amplify in a live situation, therefore it is desirable to augment them with recorded vocals.
How do I set up and use split trax?
Split trax have the accompaniment on one channel and the vocals on the other, so two channels of the PA console are required. A Y adaptor that sums the two channels of the recording into one channel of the board should not be used. If the PA is being run in stereo, both channels should be panned Center. The accompaniment level will be controlled by one channel of the PA. The amount of supporting recorded vocals will be controlled by the other channel. Monitor sends are also independently controllable. It is customary to send the supporting vocals only to the house and not the monitors.
