Item Description

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn Mono 1st press Blue/Black Columbia Labels This is a stunning version of this classic album and the audio as detailed below plays with incredible quality.
I have play tested every second so as to give an honest and thorough grading that this iconic album deserves. It has single stampers on each side denoting it as one of the earliest first mono pressings.
The flipback cover is so clean and is without doubt one of the best I have seen.
Matrix numbers : XAX 3419 - 2 / XAX 3420 - 1 // Stampers H1 / L1 The audio on S1 is Ex Near Mint in some sections The audio on S2 is Ex Near Mint in some sections - one 5 second section is VG The laminated cover is Ex almost Ex The labels are Near Mint The original inner sleeve is Ex Visual gradingThis vinyl for its advanced age is in lovely condition.
There are a relatively small number of faint hairlines and a couple of more obvious small marks but to all intents and purposes it has obviously been very well maintained down the years.
It has been played a number of times judging by the spindle wear but there are no deep scratches at all and is without doubt one of the cleanest I have seen in a long time and even the run out grooves are very clean.Play grading Astronomy Domine begins with barely any static on the intro and then proceeds to play with incredibly clear audio.
There are no clicks, pops or crackle and none of the distortion that is often prevalent on these pressings.
There are a minimal number of mega light dust ticks but they are very much in the background so do not intrude on the wonderful audio.
Lucifer Sam plays with the same quality and has no interference again.
Perhaps a light amount of distortion on the top end but this is no doubt due to a mono record being played through a stereo set up.The intro on Matilda Mother plays with such stunning clarity you re thinking is this a 50 year old record? The remainder more than matches this standard with only a hint of background static in a couple of places.Again the intro on Flaming is just immaculate and deserves a Near Mint grading if not better The sonic quality is breathtaking and the audio continues in the same sublime fashion.
In all my years I have never heard a better version of this track on a mono first press. The depth of the audio on Pow R.
Toc H really stands out as it is one of the quietest tracks on the album.
There is no background to speak of and the very quiet ending is absolutely stunning.
No interference whatsoever.
Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk ends S1 with great sound and only a little distortion on the top end.
Remember though this has been play tested through a stereo system.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Interstellar Overdrive has a minimal amount of static at the start but again is totally non-intrusive.
This classic then plays with excellent quality with just some of the ubiquitous distortion here and there.
There aren t many but the quieter passages play with almost perfect precision.
There are a couple of dull pops literally at the end.
The Gnome also has about 4 dull raspy pops at the start which is a shame as the remainder is so impressive with sound quality that is nigh on perfect.
There is no interference and 98 of the track grades as Near Mint. For such a quiet track Chapter 24 plays with immense clarity and depth.
If I m being super harsh there is just a hint of mega light static in a couple of places but hey you would find that on a new vinyl let alone one of 50 years of age The audio is astounding and again I don t think I ve heard a better version.
The Scarecrow is superb, no other word for it There is no background and once more this deserves a Near Mint grading. The classic Bike ends the album with wonderfully clear audio again and no obvious interference.
I m sounding repetitive now but this is without doubt the cleanest version I have ever heard on a mono first press.
In summary this is a final upgrade, archive copy of that I have no doubt.
For such a rare vinyl to play so clearly is such a rarity when you consider how many parties these were taken to in the late 60s For S1 to have no clicks or pops is incredibly rare and with only one small 5 second section falling below an Ex grading on S2 this side also is incredibly impressive.
There is complete silence in the dead wax between the majority of the tracks and when there isn t there is only a minimal amount of tiny static sounds.
A stunning iconic album that will not disappoint the avid collector.
CoverThe laminated E.J.
Day cover is one of best I have ever seen.
As can be seen the flipbacks are exceptionally clean with hardly any of the staining that you so often see.
They do not have any splits, just a handful of faint creases.
Whilst we re on the subject of the back cover there are a two marks near the centre but to be honest they are very faint and you don t notice them at first glance.
There is also one small rub mark below the flipback near the opening edge.
Overall though this back cover is very clean and remains in great condition.
It has the File under Pop on the top right flipback with the cat number just below it.The front cover also remains in wonderful shape with no splitting or lifting of the laminate.
There are a small number of creases although not obvious.
The edges and thin pinched spine are in superb condition with no shelf wear whatsoever, an amazing rarity.
The opening edge has very light handling wear only.
The corners are also very clean with only a small crease mark on the bottom right one. This is definitely one of the most impressive 1st mono press covers I have ever seen.Inner sleeveThe original sleeve is in superb shape with no splits or tears.
It has the Sgt Peppers and Piper cover on either side and only has some light creasing. The labelsThe famous Blue/Black Columbia labels have no marks or writing on them and are extremely clean.
They have a reasonable and not excessive amount of spindle wear.
It has the KT tax stamp on the S2 label.Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / BW 684 Speakers Matrix numbers : XAX 3419 - 2 / XAX 3420 - 1 // Stampers H1 / L1I grade according to Record Collector guidelines.
