Holy Grail Hunky Dory

For David Bowie collectors, connoisseurs, and completists, offered here is the rarest UK RCA pressing of his first masterpiece, Hunky Dory, in NEAR MINT- condition. There is no doubt this LP was in the very first batch offered for sale when the album was released on December 17, 1971. This is proved by the fact that this LP is housed in the first of two laminated cover versions.
Bowie collectors know first pressings of Hunky Dory were housed in desirable laminated covers, which showcase Bowie’s portrait in vibrant colors far superior to the dull colors on the standard covers. However, many collectors aren’t aware that the initial pressing had two versions of the laminated cover. First-version laminated covers have a printing error omission. On these copies, the back cover’s upper-right-hand corner lists only the RCA catalogue number, SF 8244, with (LSP 4623) underneath it. RCA immediately corrected this error and second-version laminated covers include (a) the album title, Hunky Dory; (b) the artist, David Bowie; and (c) the management company/logo, A Gem Production.
Although Bowie achieved superstardom in the UK after he released The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, his future was far less assured after he released Hunky Dory half a year earlier. In fact, although Hunky Dory generated rave reviews upon its release, it was a poor seller—until RCA re-released it to cash in on the Ziggy Stardust breakthrough. First pressings of Hunky Dory with the laminated cover are very difficult to find in any condition. A first pressing with the first version laminated cover in NEAR MINT- condition is a rarity on par with the UK Mercury The Man Who Sold the World “dress” cover version.
DISC: This UK 1st pressing LP is visually in NEAR MINT- condition. Both sides show full gloss, with barely any light sleeve removal marks. Both RCA labels show no spindle trails.

COVER: This 1st version of the Holy Grail front-laminated Hunky Dory cover is in EXCELLENT+ condition.

The 1st version laminated cover (offered here) on the back side in the top right corner omits the following information:

  • "Hunky Dory"
  • "David Bowie"
  • Gem Production logo
  • "A Gem Production" line

RCA quickly corrected the error and replaced 1st version covers with 2nd version front-laminated covers with all of the information. Soon after that, RCA replaced 2nd version covers with unlaminated covers.
This front-laminated Hunky Dory cover with the printing error makes it a rarity on par with that of the UK Mercury Man Who Sold the World dress cover. You can read more about the various UK Hunky Dory cover variations at http://www.bowie-collection.de/70_74.htm

  • I grade conservatively. MINT is a sealed LP; NEAR MINT is an open LP/cover
with virtually no signs of use/wear; EXCELLENT is a well-looked-after LP/cover
with light signs of use/wear; VERY GOOD+ is an LP/cover with average signs of
    use/wear but is not trashed.
  • I use unforgiving sunlight and incandescent light to visually grade each LP.
  • I don’t make unverifiable claims as to how many plays a non-sealed LP has had.
