BARABAS : A Tribute To Andy.
ORIGINAL ISSUE UK STEREO vinyl LP. From the mid 70s.
Insanely rare private pressing. This is a pressed vinyl record - not an acetate.
This is the first copy to surface - in 40 odd years. There are none on Popsike.
There is no mention of this anywhere on the net. You can try looking but all you'll get is pages and pages of Lou Reed's tribute to Andy Warhol & tributes to Andy Williams.
You can find 2 mentions of the group - one stating that they played a gig in Derby Market Place - the other stating the bass player - Sam Samways - had died. Both references spell the group name as Barabbas - the Biblical spelling.
The group were local to Derby in the UK - not to be confused with the Spanish funk outfit Barrabas.
This is what I was told on purchasing this from a friend of the drummer.
The group had demoed for EMI and were on the verge of signing a deal when, sadly, Andy was killed in a motorbike accident. These tracks were already recorded and the LP was pressed in a tiny quantity - as a Tribute To Andy - hence the title.
I have traced a date of death for Andy to September 1976.
The run out grooves bear etched details btw - a - barabas and btw - b - barabas. I believe that this was possibly recorded sometime around 1975 , possibly early 1976, as John Borthwick is credited on 2 of the BTW releases in 1974 - BTW, in addition to being a record library label was also a recording studio - and mastered using their facilites. Sadly John Borthwick died around 10 years ago.
I still cannot ascertain a pressing date. I have ascertained that BTW outsourced their pressings and vinyl production.
Their archives for that era no longer exist.
PLEASE NOTE: This record must be sent FULLY INSURED and tracked at the buyer's expense. Look upon it as protecting your investment.
I have started the auction at a price I feel is appropriate, based on rarity & content.
Grading: I try to grade conservatively and I don't grade anything as mint unless it's sealed. All faults will be described.
Please look at all the pictures as they are of the item for sale and form part of the description.
Hand drawn & photocopied paste on front & rear. 2 pieces of paper pasted onto a plain white cover. I suspect the cover drawing is "Andy".
The rear contains track listing & group personnel.
Both pieces of pasted on paper are rippled -as you might expect.
The sleeve is flat - although it might appear bowed in the pictures - this is due to my inadequate camera.
The record is flat. Plays through fine. There are some marks but playback is unaffected.
The labels are hand written. There are pencil guidelines on there to ensure the writing is straight. The writing appears to have been done by the same hand as the rear of the cover.
I have inserted some sound samples of the actual record for sale below. These are parts of the named tracks. This is a full length LP.
