Artist: PETER AND GORDON with Paul McCartney on drums Title: WOMAN Size: 7 EMI ACETATE DISCSpeed: 45 RPMNo.
Sides: 2Recording Date: 01/12/65Acetate Pressed: 08/12/65Engineer: Ken Scott KS Condition: Mint both sides play perfectly ABOUT THE ACETATEI have for sale here an exceptionally rare EMI Acetate disc of Peter Gordon s Woman as written and arranged by Paul McCartney, and also featuring Paul McCartney. This is a 100 authentic EMI Acetate Vinyl Disc, and contains a PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SESSION of this song with PAUL MCCARTNEY PLAYING DRUMS.
For those who are unaware of the recording history of this song, Woman was recorded twice by Peter and Gordon, the first session was on the 1st December 1965.
Paul McCartney was present for this session, he arranged the orchestra for his composition and also played drums for the session.
However, unhappy with the finished product, Peter and Gordon returned to the Studio on the 31st December 1965 to completely re-record the track, this time with a bigger orchestral sound - this version of the song was released as a single in early 1966.
This meant that Paul McCartney s version of the song was never release - until now.Paul has often referred to the recording of Woman during print and session interviews, and always noted that his version of the song was very different to the released record - you can now hear it for yourself This acetate contains two mixes of the the 1st December 1965 recording session, a session which before now has never been released.
The disc was cut on the 8th December 1965 after the first session by Engineer Ken Scott, his initials KS are on the acetate.
The acetate disc is TWO SIDED and contains TWO MIXES of the original 1st December session.
One is marked Mix 1 and the other RM4 .
Both sides of the acetate are mint and playback without any skipping, and with almost no surface noise.
The disc itself has a rich shine and acetate smell, and is among the finest EMI Discs I have ever seen - this disc really has been well looked after for almost 50 years.
ABOUT THE RECORDINGThe recordings on this disc are a completely different take to those heard on the single release.
From the sample clip attached you will hear that the drums start earlier and are much more simple played by Paul.
Also the orchestral arrangement is much more subtle than the final single, and the vocals are also very different.
The orchestra used for this recording was smaller, and the instrumental break much more simple than the final record.
The two mixes on the disc are also different to one another, with higher vocal and drum levels amongst the distinguishing features. This is very much Paul McCartney s arrangement of this song, a much more stripped back recording, and his unique drumming style on this recording has never been heard before.
UNIQUE ONE OF A KIND AUTHENTIC DISCWhat makes this disc even more unique, other than hearing Paul McCartney playing drums for another artists is that I have had it confirmed that this recording NO LONGER EXISTS AT EMI.
Along with mosts recordings from this time the original master tape has been destroyed, so this acetate could be the only copy of this historic session in existence This information was provided to me by Beatle Historian Mark Lewisohn. With this in mind there is a reserve on this acetate of 749.99 1100 .
Also, unlike most acetates on eBay of late, this is an authentic EMI Acetate, and has been authenticated by Mark Lewisohn see Mark s information at the bottom of the listing .
