This 1971 album is one of the rarest David Bowie collectables. When the album was released it was the sleeve that attracted most attention as it featured Bowie in a dress, to the extent that some collectors now refer to it as the ‘transvestite cover’. While it sold in insufficient numbers to enter the charts in 1971 it did attract a good deal of airplay on radio, particularly on the John Peel Show.
When Bowie made his big breakthrough the following year, in 1972, his new record label, RCA Victor, re-issued his earlier Phillips and Mercury albums. In the case of ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, the ‘dress’ cover was ditched in favour of a new sleeve. The re-issued RCA album made number 26 in the chart and the original Mercury album become a collectors’ item overnight.
