Item Description

Sweet child in time you ll see the line, The line that s drawn between the good and the bad.
See the blind man shooting at the world, Bullets flying, taking toll.
If you ve been bad, Lord I bet you have, And you ve been hit by flying lead, You d better close your eyes and bow your head, And wait for the ricochet.
DEEP PURPLE: Deep Purple In Rock LP.
APRIL,1973 UK PRESSING, THE FIRST ISSUE WAS 12th JUNE, 1970 AND AS I WORK MY WAY THROUGH ALL THE ORIGINAL ITEMS I WILL EXPLAIN HOW I ARRIVED AT SUCH A SPECIFIC MONTH AND YEAR OF THE PRESSING.
FIRST ISSUED IN 1970, I ALWAYS TRY TO GIVE ALL RECORDS PRECISE DATES FOR THE RELEASE WHEN POSSIBLE, FOR THE CLOSELY CONNECTED SLIGHTLY LATER PRESSINGS, AS CLOSE AS I CAN PHYSICALLY GET.
I COULD JUST SAY I HAVE SOLD MULTIPLE COPIES FROM THIS YEAR BEFORE JOINING EBAY AND DURING OUR FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER TWO DECADES TRADING AT RECORD FAIRS.
THEN , I WOULD LOVE TO JUST SAY I KNOW ALL EMI PRESSINGS LIKE OLD FRIENDS AND RECOGNISE THE SLIGHTEST CHANGES, BUT FACTS ARE NECESSARY TO NOT RELY ON A PERSONAL OPINION.
GREEN HARVEST LABEL: SHVL 777.
.
MAITRIX: SHVL 777 A - 2 / SHVL 777 B - 1 April, 1973 was not that far past June, 1970 and EMI s maitrix reflect that, the later 1970 s pressing had ever increasing digits maitrix endings, this was a continuation and re-setting the digits had yet to happen.
During those 15 years on ebay, I have sold a few 1973 pressings of the incredible Deep Purple In Rock, all Mint and so all the items were exactly as first issued, down to the original inner sleeve.
From them I arrived at the approximate pressing date, mostly from the 1973 pressings, but as the new EMI label rim text was introduced in April, 1970, some pressings were made and that is where In Rock originated from, in fact, this week is the 43th anniversary of this pressing The next item is EMI s stamping codes and a first mother on one side, really says it all.
EMI STAMPING CODES: RGG 1 / RAO 4 No further comments are necessary the digit at 9 o clock are 1 on one side record, for EMI records from the 1960 s and 1970 s decades that becomes exclusive by January 1980.
The changes had begun and the stamping code maitrix format was changed and by late 1982, there were no letters or digits at 3 9 o clock.
The real issue here is a 43 year old true Mint Deep Purple In Rock LP and by working through all original items to establish a pressing date, the above RAO 4 has a story to tell.
A story of the most meticulous mastering to vinyl ever known in the 60 s and 70 s, by EMI.
Be it the Beatles, Pink Floyd or Deep Purple, sound reproduction was all important.
The sound engineer who was responsible for this record s mastering, pressing indexing depended on accuracy, the three proceedings are inseparable, as the sound of record s sound depended on accuracy.
The sound engineer here did not carve his logo into the run-out grooves, but most certainly still left his dedication to accuracy in the run-out grooves.
In error he originally set the stamping machine to OAR at 3 o clock on Side 2, immediately seeing the mistake.
he carefully over stamped the letter X on the three letters, reset the stamping machine correctly and stamped RAO.
Hardly a world stopping mistake but he knew it was wrong and he or maybe she, was dedicated enough to stamp the coded letters to keep the indexing of the few copies made in April, 1970 accurate.
That story illustrates how much loving care went into the mastering, the pressing...
and the resulting sound quality of this specific record I am offering for sale 43 years after it was made.
It also perfectly sums up why I started thoroughly examining the run-out grooves in the 1980 s, that actually began in the 1970 s, studying multiple copies of the same titles and discovering all the indexing.
To understand how easily we reverse the order of three letters...is the human element , I have probably made a dozen typing mistakes by now, some I will see and correct, some will just be missed.
EMI s technician deserved promotion and a salary increase, but almost daily I find similar errors and it was not easier when in 1980 the coded letters were replaced by actul digits, but that same human mistake of jumbling the order of the digits carried on regardless THE LABEL RIMS HAVE EM Records Ltd.
AND NOT Gramophone Co.
Ltd.
TEXT FOUND ON COPIES PRESSED BETWEEN JUNE, 1970 AND MARCH, 1973.
ONLY THE VERY FIRST PRESSINGS IN 1970, DID NOT HAVE THE BOXED EMI LOGO, LOCATED AT 9 O CLOCK ON THE LABELS.
YOU CAN ALSO SEE HOW RIM THE TEXT ON THESE 1973 RECORDS ALSO HAD Made In Gt.
Britain MOVED FROM 6 O CLOCK, TO APPROXIMATELY 4 O CLOCK, TO THE END OF THE RIM TEXT.
ORIGINAL 1973, EMI INNER SLEEVE, THE 1960 s TYPE WAS STILL IN USE IN APRIL, PLAIN WHITE WITH CURVED CORNERS AND A SHAPED TOP OPENING ON THE FRONT.
THE BOTTOM RIM OF THE FRONT HAS THE PATENT NUMBER AND Made In Great Britain PRINTED IN BLACK INK.
Unused, unsplit and unworn with a record impression and a few related light creases, a touch of natural ageing after 43 years THE INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED, NEAR MINT CONDITION.
Garrod Lofthouse PRINTED GATEFOLD COVER, WITH DELUXE THICK, VERY GLOSSY LAMINATION OUTSIDE, EVEN THE SHAPE IS UNCHANGED SINCE 1970.
THE TOP FRONT HAS A BOWED SHAPE, AS SEEN IN MY PICTURE WHERE THE LIGHT REFLECTION PERFECTLY PICKED OUT THE TOP FRONT S DISTINCTIVE SHAPE.
INSIDE THE GATEFOLD IS STILL THE DATE CODE FOR THE FIRST PRESSING COVER S PRINTING: 7006 June, 1970.
I was the first to open the gatefold in 43 years, I carefully eased it open, the picture of the full outside is how comfortably it allowed, I never stretch as new lamination beyond the natural position.
An unplayed, early 1970 s Deep Purple In Rock is quite amazing and being unused, all to detail involves standing in storage for all those decades.
A picture taken of both inside panels demonstrates how the white background is completely unaged, astonishingly still the same pure white as the day it was closed in the factory all those decades ago now.
Unplayed or not, nothing can stop the effect of gravity on a massively heavyweight 1973 record, inside a cardboard cover.
A reasonably gentle record impression and a few related tiny laminated edge lines, as usual, mostly alongside the spine s meeting point with the front back edges.
As they form naturally and not from use or handling, I tend to include them in text and for a very rare unplayed record, cannot possibly include natural formations in the grading.
The same applies to the slightest standing traits, light brushing to the spine ends but the other corners are absolutely perfect, a truly stunning looking cover without any form of fading or ageing, the deeply glossy, deluxe thick lamination is mother less than spectacular, please refer to my pictures to see I am not exaggerating, this really is a fantastic cover I took an angled picture of the front top section, being so early in 1973, this has the first pressing s bowed shape, yet another massive clue to when it was made in 1973.
Grading an unused, carefully stored gatefold cover, kept inside in a plastic outer sleeve from day one, simply has to contain the word, Mint or this becomes no more than a farce.
43 years is a long time ago and I refuse to drop below this when the condition is so staggering, plus the whole principal of grading all items, hinges on use , which this did not have THE COVER IS IN MINT- CONDITION.
THE IMMACULATE, AS NEW LABELS DO NOT HAVE ANY SPINDLE ALIGNMENTS, THE RECORD IS ALSO LITERALLY AS NEW.
WITH THAT JUST PRESSED BEAUTIFUL GLOSSY SHINE AND WITHOUT ANY SCRATCHES OR MARKS, I COULD NOT FIND A SINGLE HANDLING TRACE ON THE PRISTINE SURFACE.
WONDERFUL TO SEE A TRUE MINT EARLY 1970 s HARVEST PRESSING OF In Rock , AND FOR THAT AGE, I WILL RESPECT SUCH A RARITY AND NOT PLAY IT MYSELF.
AS USUAL, I CHECK ALL UNPLAYED RECORDS FOR ANY TRACES OF FACTORY OR RECORD SHOP HANDLING, I FOUND NOTHING, BUT ANY FEATHER LIGHT, NEAR INVISIBLE TRACES ARE CERTAINLY NOT VISUALLY OBVIOUS.
I INCLUDED A CLOSE UP PICTURE OF SIDE 1 s SPINDLE HOLE AREA WITH DELICATE VINYL SHAVINGS, STILL UNDISTURBED BY BEING ON A TURNTABLE, THAT ALONE FORMS THE ULTIMATE GRADING THE RECORD IS IN UNPLAYED, MINT CONDITION.

Produced By Deep Purple With all the pressing details taken care of, I would like to now concentrate one of the greatest rock albums I have ever heard.
My first encounter with Deep Purple was picking up their 1968 single, Hush, a really great version, but I was not all that taken with a new band who concentrated almost entirely on recording their take on other artist s material and for that, a single was all I bought, I never got into their early albums.
Limited funds played a big part in which albums you could afford to buy, late 60 s was an era of monumental LP s being released on a weekly basis, there were always several vital titles left outstanding.
Then in the summer of 1970 all that changed, suddenly everyone was raving about the new Deep Purple LP that was on the same level as Led Zeppelin for heavy rock / blues.
I was intrigued and bought In Rock , the second I heard just the intro to Child In Time, it was something new and sensational Just to put a perspective onto this, because time scales can only come into the equation in hindsight, heavy rock was starting to emerge as an alternative to underground and progressive music, which had begun to stagnate and become boring.
In Rock was released before Black Sabbath s August,1970 Paranoid single, and the success from that sent their same titled second album surging up the LP charts, so this second line-up of Deep Purple Mark 2 , were the first UK band to kick start the 1970 s decade by releasing such an adrenaline fuelled heavy rock album of real substance.
Unlike Led Zeppelin, who were now including acoustic folk tracks on approximately half of their third album in 1970, every second of In Rock stayed at an extraordinary level of overpowering musicianship.
It often happens to bands who last for decades or their splinter off-shoots, they wrote and recorded such a era defining album, nothing that followed ever quite hit such heights, In Rock simply could not be bettered or replicated, a true masterpiece of a record.
Deep Purple were very brave to attempt this in 1970, their previous LP s and singles had failed to be commercially successful and unlike Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, In Rock did not contain any kind of acoustic interludes, right from the opening howls of Speed King the scorching red hot pace never relented until the needle left the the final grooves of the last track on Side 2, Hard Lovin Man.
No studio enhanced effects were necessary or used, only the most breathtaking musicianship because the band played as inspiredly as anything ever recorded, then or today.
I regularly read how The Album is no longer desirable among today s music lovers? , downloading/streaming has killed them off.
Is that right? No wonder original vinyl is so desirable today, have we bred a generation only able to digest tracks individually instead of enjoying a whole set of new tracks recorded by the same artists.
What a crazy situation, albums were a work of art in my era, that has not changed among currently genuine talent, just cramming as many tracks onto a hard drive cannot possibly open up the various moods and variety within songwriting and production.
The 90 minutes on a cassette and 80 minutes on a CDR were long enough for a compilation, stretching that into infinity is not an advance, but a retreat into mediocrity.
2015 - 2016 has hardly produced the inspiration and genius that propelled Deep Purple and all the amazing music being created in the 60 s and 70 s, stifling artists creativity will expose limitations and the tracks on the hard drives will only end up sounding the same.
The original 1968 line-up of Deep Purple had two different musicians to this second 1970 incarnation, I am not keen on calling them Mark 2 , a very silly title that is better left for a model of a car than such a great band, they were Rod Evans - vocals, Nic Simper - bass, Ritchie Blackmore - guitar, Jon Lord, organ and Ian Paice - drums.
Three albums were released from them, initially on EMI s Parlophone label before moving onto the Harvest label, the lead vocalist Rod Evans was replaced by Ian Gillan and the departing Nic Simper s bass was taken over by Roger Glover s.
The effect from that was immediate and dynamite The impact lost all their previous flirtations with pop cover versions and the orchestral enhanced sounds found on their debut Harvest album, Concerto For Group And Orchestra , recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1969.
That did include Ian Gillian and Roger Glover but it was more like shaking off the experimental stages that were in no way utilising the incredible musical chemistry that was not in need of stifling and formulised arrangements.
Apologies to anyone who is fond of that album, my descriptions are honestly given personal opinions, I do not build up albums I consider third rate with the superlatives I do not believe they merit.
There are dozens of examples where rock and orchestration worked superbly, but the material had to be original and exciting or how could the outcome be even remotely inspired? In Rock was recorded with Ritchie Blackmore s guitar and and Jon Lord s organ unshackled by those former restraints imposed by the previous material, now the band co-wrote every single track and with such a commanding and an inspirational vocalist as Ian Gillan, the album caught fire and it hit the heady heights of No.4 in the UK charts.
So by no means a rare album as a first pressing but like my original they took such heavy punishment, I would not even consider offering inferior graded vinyl, this is an album to blow your socks clean off, the sonic audio properties mastered into the heavyweight vinyl in the early 70 s was colossal.
Worn out is...worn out, any attempt to stretch the grading will not compensate for hearing Deep Purple In Rock as a pale shadow of it s true greatness.
I made sure all the first issue label details were in my main headings, the majority of copies were played incessantly regardless of being pressed in 1970 or a few years later, all true great albums were.
I love nothing better than offering a Mint first pressing, I did last year but it took 5 years after the previous sale on ebay, an unplayed first issue without an EMI boxed logo etc.
is the toughest of all, for records of this stature.
This ultimate true Mint slightly later pressing was mastered and pressed perfectly from EMI s Master Tapes and I m mightily tempted to hear the record Child in Time is my personal pick of the bunch, a track that knows no equal for true greatness, this record will have fantastic sound and give full pleasure when listening to a masterpiece of an Album .
Roy R M RECORDS.
My lifetime s love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960 s decade in general had a very profound effect.
It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl into becoming a professional record seller.
Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere of record fairs with the highest possible standards set.
When the Internet became the world s new market place for vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay.
Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be, the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly and very efficient service we are proud to provide EVERY RECORD IS FULLY PLAYED AND COMES WITH A NO ARGUMENT MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office s new price increases, regretfully we will have to increase the cost of LP s, however, singles will remain unchanged.
Ebay were aware of that happening and have increased their minimum postal cost for LP s to 7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of 46.
A temporary reduction this week means we can now post LP s for 5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to 7? For LP s valued above 46, the cost will be 9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.
