Limited 180gm audiophile vinyl LP including insert. First Utterance is the debut album of the progressive folk band Comus. It was released in 1971, with the opening song 'Diana' being released as a single. The album was notable for it's unique blend of progressive rock, folk, psychedelia and elements of paganism and the macabre. The overall thematic tone of the album is of vulnerable innocence facing abusive power, the songs dealing with violence ('Drip Drip'), rape ('Diana', 'Song to Comus') and insulin shock therapy ('The Prisoner'). These themes contrast starkly with the acoustic sound of the record, featuring acoustic guitar, violin, flute and lyrical, almost Arcadian, female harmonies. The cover artwork was drawn in ball point pen by Roger Wootton, lead singer and songwriter of the band. The centerfold artwork was painted by guitarist Glenn Goring. Reviews were favorable, such as the NME praised the album's 'highly unusual but fascinating sound' and Time Out said 'the overall effect is unique'.

RUN AWAY FROM THIS SELLER. First off, this is MovieMars who has such a bad rep on eBay they opened a new fake eBay account. They have a robot that responds to all you questions with no actual answer. Shipping states it would arrive e THREE days after purchase. They DIDNT EVEN SEND IT UNTIL THREE WEEKS LATER! When pressured as to when it would ship, they posted a tracking number that had not been activated because they still didn’t drop off. Then when it did arrive weeks later it was destroyed.

I was really hoping this LP was the version in the photo showing “from the Original Analogue Master Tapes”, but this version is brand new and sounds good. Fast shipment and great price. Overall happy with this LP. Thanks.

  • Poor reproduction.

I bought the new Music on Vinyl press of First Utterence. While the disc sounds wonderful and is 180 gram, the cover is horrible. Washed out colors on the front and back, somehow it is very pixelated.and the inner gatefold is absolutely horrendous. Just completely pixelated to the point of almost no recognition when compared to the original artwork. Washed out and blurry colour is very apparent. The lyric insert has a completely different colour, the original was white and pink while this one is very red. Also they do not shrinkwrap it. They put it in a very flimsy, poor quality, resealable outer sleeve that tore within minutes of me handling it and it’s just barely sticky on the sealed end. The sound quality is a very solid 10/10 (sounds wonderful and dead quiet pressing) while the artwork ...

  • Astounding...Get it, now

Love this disc. Read an article in Shindig Magazine which prompted a youtube search and found several excellect live videos which inturn led me to find and purchase the album. It's is an excellent re-issue on 180 grams with an exacting fold out cover ...the artwork is as the origional and even more there is a lyric sheet included and band bio...don't know that this stuff was in origional release. As per the music I find it haunting and often surreal. The instrumentation as far as can tell it's all acoustic and no drums...percussion is tambourine, bongs & an assortment of hand drums. By suggestion would be to locate the Shindig Issue: Witches Hats & Painted Chariots ( it was a special issue ) and watch the videos on youtube...then get the album, an origional release will put a hurt on the ...
